Breaking into the Paddling Season…

On Monday, Matt and Hannah Abotts stopped by the shop and while there we made plans to paddle yesterday evening when everyone was done working. They had just gotten back from Canoecopia and were really itching to get out on the water again.

So, yesterday we met out at McLain State Park around 5:30 to check out the cliffs south of Breakers. I have to say, yesterday was just a gorgeous day up here. As I was driving by the bank in Hancock on my way to meet Matt and Hannah the clock was showing a temp of 57 degrees. That’s just crazy for mid March up here. However, you won’t see me complaining.

Anyway, when I arrived Matt and Hannah were already there but Hannah wasn’t feeling well, so Matt and I got our kit on and carried down to the water. Once at the shoreline there was almost no ice to compete with, so off we went. The breakwalls protecting the north entry of the Portage Canal were still capped in ice which made for some cool formations and nooks to explore. The rest of the shoreline was pretty ice free. There were still some huge chunks hanging onto the cliffs and it seemed like they could let go at any moment. I was actually hoping to see one of them let go… so long and neither Matt or I were very near.

It’s was a great night and I had a lot of fun paddling with Matt. I should probably apologize to him as any time I go paddling with just one other person they seem to get left to their own devices every so often while I stop or paddle ahead to see what my camera can see.

Not a bad way to kick off the season.

Canoe and Kayak Beginner’s Guide…

March 6th, 2010 1 comment

Earlier this year I had the opportunity to photograph an incredible instructor duo for Canoe and Kayaks yearly beginner’s guide. Sam Crowley and Nancy Uschold run Sea Kayak Specialists right here in Marquette and were being profiled in the magazine. Well, the issue has finally hit the newsstands and I was as surprised as anyone to see one of my images as the lead profile. On top of that, the image ran across the full two-page spread.

Being the first image I’ve had published that will be seen by people other than students and alumni of Michigan Tech… this is a pretty big deal to me.

Anyway, I really should thank Sam and Nancy for putting up with me, both in Nancy’s garage and out at the breakwall. They were really good sports and a lot of fun to talk to. I also need to thank SamĀ Gardner for coming down to Marquette and holding the strobes. Lastly, I need to thank Conor Mihell for suggesting me as a potential photographer. Conor wrote the profile that accompanies the photo and a handful of other articles throughout the magazine.

Marquette Paddling Portraits

January 4th, 2010 1 comment

Well, yesterday was my first assignment for the new year. We kicked things off with a trip down to Marquette to create some portraits of Sam Crowley and Nancy Uschold of Sea Kayak Specialists. Sam and Nancy are kayak instructor instructors and are some of the people responsible for making sure many of the new instructors here in the Midwest know there stuff.

Apparently they are pretty good at what they do and because of their commitment to quality instruction they are being featured in an upcoming article in one of the paddling magazines. This is the point where I come in. The magazine in question was in need of some images of Sam and Nancy and for whatever reason… too little caffeine, still hungover, ???… the editor asked me to take them.

So, yesterday morning I packed up the car, picked up Sam Gardner in Baraga(sam came mostly to surf… but I put him to work for a bit), and headed for Marquette. We arrived at Nancy’s house just before 8:30 and we started setting up in her garage. For the first set of portraits I wanted to do some clean individual shots on white. The magazine had not requested these images, but we were there and you never know what you might need in the future. So, I set up my foursquare softbox behind the subject with an silver umbrella directly above and in front. I then took two sets of images… one in casual clothes and the other with Nancy and Sam in their paddling kit. Here you can see the black and white conversions. I am really liking this type of portrait. It is easy and quick to setup, produces good results, and the simple nature of the image really lets you focus on the person. I can understand why this type of setup has been so widely used in different types of portrait collections.

Anyway, after the headshots we moved the lights around and went to work creating a portrait of both Sam and Nancy in front of their kayaks which were stored in the garage for winter. I was hoping to create something of a season neutral image. We used the kayaks as the background, set up two sb26′s as rim lights high and out of the frame on the left and right. Then I used my Foursquare softbox with 2 sb26′s as the main light. The only issue I has was trying to control the falloff from the main light. No matter where I positioned it, I just couldn’t seem to keep it from contaminating the background. If I moved it in really close so that the light fell off more quickly the difference in exposure across Sam and Nancy was too great for my tastes. If I moved the main light back to even out the exposure more light fell on the background. Ideally I would have used a boom to support the light directly above and slightly in front of the subjects. This would even out the exposure across the subjects and allow me to get it close enough that the light would fall off quickly enough to no contaminate the background.

Below you can see that the main light was situated at camera right. Nancy’s shoulder is a little hot, but not bad. The spill from the main light was limited to the left side and I kinda like the light to dark gradient. I was thinking about this issue and at the time I wish I had a boom, but the reality is that I could have just move the main light in tight and exposed the frame so that Nancy’s shoulder was just a little hot. Then I could have added another strobe into an umbrella set as far behind me as possible to serve as a kinda of on-axis fill to help bring up the darker area around Sam. I don’t really know if this would have produced anything appealing, but I would have been worth a shot. I just have to remember to use what I have and not wish for things I didn’t.

After the garage session we moved out to the breakwall at Presque Isle. Here I positioned Sam and Nancy on the far right of the frame using the waves crashing against the wall and the lighthouse as background elements. I did this because the sample image that was sent to me had a similar appearance. I figure they might need that space for text. The conditions were very… uhhh… how to put it… grey. The water, sky and snow were all about the same tone. So, I decided to gel the strobes and push the ambient into the blue spectrum. The helps the subjects pop and adds a bit of drama to the scene.

After the shots on the breakwall we jumped down to some ice covered rocks nearby and did a quick session keeping the light setup the same. Sam Gardner was kind enough to hold the light so that we were a bit more mobile and I didn’t have to worry about everything blowing off into the lake.

Well, I hope this was interesting for those of you that frequent my site. If anyone out there has any suggestions or criticisms I’d love to hear them. Keep in mind that I’m just making this stuff up as I go. Another assignment tomorrow here in town… stay tuned.

Later.

Everyone knows what winter means…

WINTER KAYAKING!

Yes, it is that exciting. You may think that paddling in the winter is stupid, but I am here to tell you that winter is the best time to paddle. Once you get past the fact that the air is cold, the water is cold, and if you go in there’s a good chance you aren’t going to come out… it’s a ton of fun. It does require a bit more planning, and a bit more gear than kayaking in the summer, but it is worth it.

Everything is more beautiful in the winter and even though we usually don’t have a problem with crowds around here… there are even less people. Plus you get to be that person that everyone looks at with one eyebrow raised because there’s snow on the ground, it’s 25 degrees out and you have three kayaks on top of you car. That’s right… you could be that person.

On another note… the memory card that contains the bulk of the images I shot today is currently PhotoRescue ICU and they are doing everything they can to stabilize it’s condition. However, you should know… the outlook is bleak.

In the meantime here are some other snaps I took while Sam and Matt were waiting for me to get my shit together.

Later.

UPDATE:

Here are some additional images from our paddle that I was able to recover from my dysfunctional memory card.

Gales of November – Teaser

Always good to leave a note

What a great weekend. I had the opportunity to paddle in a beautiful area, met some amazing people, and just plain had a good time. However, I’m going to be late for work if I sit here much longer, but I thought I would try and get a couple images out there. I will be post more later… check back!

A day off…

September 21st, 2009 No comments

Went paddling on Thursday. It was great. Wasn’t super windy, but the water was fairly active. Nothing crazy, just enough to make many of the little rocky passages a little more interesting.

The plan was to paddle down to Fish Cove. We ended up overshooting a bit, but no biggie. In all we probably paddled 15-16 miles. It was great. I need to do that more often.

Enjoy the pics.

What a weekend…

September 7th, 2009 No comments

This last weekend was pretty crazy. Lynn and Jason had friends in town, I had some friends in town, it was Fat Tire weekend so a lot of mutual friends were in town, I had a wedding on Saturday from 12-8, camping Saturday night at Montreal Falls, kayaking in Copper Harbor Sunday morning before the race, the Jr. Fat Tire at 12:30, the Big Kid Fat Tire from 2:00 till about 5:30, then back to Houghton to catch dinner with my friends, back home to so Mari could get some sleep, then breakfast on Monday, then photo editing time.

It’s good to keep busy, but sometimes I feel like I am missing out on spending some quality time with my wife and friends. Camping on Saturday night was fun, but I didn’t get there till after dark and we were up early to go paddling. And truthfully, paddling was the only part of the day when I felt pretty relaxed. The pictures here are from that short session.

An old friend of mine, Jenny Koskey… I mean Jennifer McCarty was in town with her new husband Mike. I hadn’t seen her in a long time and didn’t even know she was married until not too long ago. Anyway, I think they had fun out on the water, and it was good talking to them both. They are both really good people and seem like a perfect match. I wish them well and hopefully our paths will cross again at a time when we can actually hang out a little bit.

Anyway, enough of my yapping. Check out some of Jen’s pictures from the race above. She’s starting to get into photography and I think she is doing a great job already. Let her know, and everyone else for that matter, what you think of the images. Be honest… it’s good for us.

Yaking…

September 4th, 2009 No comments

Earlier this week when Jill and Hans were in town we decided to go kayaking as that is something we used to do together and… well… they brought their boats all the way from Vermont.

Anyway, the day we chose was pretty nice out, but kinda windy. For a while we couldn’t decide where we wanted to go, but eventually Jill threw down and told us that we were going to go drop a car in Copper Harbor and then let the wind push us from Habard Park north. Not a bad idea.

Anyway, if you’ve never paddled this stretch of shoreline, what are you waiting for. It’s especially decent with a strong tailwind and some small waves to surf/play in.

Here are the pics.

Not much to say here… got up early, went for a paddle, it was gorgeous. It’s days like these that I wonder why I would ever want to leave this place.

Enjoy!

Paddling oh yeah!!!

April 14th, 2008 No comments

So, it’s pretty late right now, but I just wanted to post a couple of pictures from yesterday’s paddling adventure. Mari and I decided that it was nice out so we should try and put the boats in the water. So we did. We drove down to the Ramada and put in next to their dock. It was pretty nice out and playing in the ice was pretty fun. I can’t wait for more of the water to open up. It should be a pretty good summer. Anyway, just wanted to get this out there before I forgot.
