So, the new computer is here and it’s pretty much all ready to go. I played around with it a little yesterday, but truth be told, I spent most of my time updating all of the software and installing all the adobe products, lightroom, etc…
Today, however, I had everything was just sitting there waiting for me to try it out.
A little background… my laptop is an old 12″ powermac, with a 1.4Ghz processor and 1.25gb of ram. It’s still works just fine. It’s been my primary computer now for a while and I can’t say that there has been anything for me to complain about.
The new computer is a Mac Pro with two, quad core 2.8Ghz processors and 6gb or ram. There are some other differences also, faster hard drives, etc…
What did I do to test it out… I opened up a 512Mb photoshop file that’s made up of 30 or so high-res images. Working on this image on my laptop is pretty tedious. Just moving the image requires the processor to do backflips, and it just takes a while. On the new computer, you can notice a little slowdown, but for the most part it doesn’t miss a beat. Pretty sweet.
The next thing I did was rip a movie using Mac the ripper and Handbrake. Ripping the dvd to my desktop took 11 minutes using Mac the Ripper, and the conversion to mp4 took 18 minutes using handbrake. The combined total was just under a half hour. With my laptop the same task might take 8-11 hours. Now that’s cool.
For the most part, it’s just nice to be able to run photoshop, illustrator, indesign, bridge, iTunes, Firefox, and whatever else all at the same time. Oh, and the new computer sports a 24″ widescreen monitor. Also nice.
Anyway, you can see a pic of my ghetto setup at the bottom there.
