Kayaking the Sturgeon…

Today Adam Robertson and I headed down toward Otter Lake for a quick paddle… or so we thought. The plan was to put in on the Sturgeon River just north of Otter Lake down river from a small dam. We figured that it should be about 8-9 miles of paddling to get from the put-in back to our car… all in all roughly 3 hours of paddling at most. Everything started off well. We had a pretty good current and we were out of the wind. Everything was looking good. Eventually we reached the bridge where Hwy 41 crossed the river and we thought, “Hey we’re almost there.” Little did we know that we were only about half way done with our character building experience. After the bridge we were expecting the Portage canal to be around the next bend, how about the one after that… no… how about the next one… hmmm. We were getting a little ancy. Anyway, eventually we entered the portage and that was just about the time someone turned out the wind generator and cranked the dial up to 600mph!!! From where we entered the canal to where the car was would usually only take about 20ish minutes to paddle on a nice day. Today however it took us almost 2 hours. There were times when I thought that if it got shallow enough I am going to get out and walk. Sometimes if felt like I was just paddling in place. It was a great workout! Anyway, we made it and we were tired and I believe that the total trip ended up being almost 14 miles not 9.

Here’s our Route…
